Program Spotlight: Greening Toledo

What do environmental education and holistic sexuality education have in common? Both seek to explore the interactions between dynamic natural and human systems, and both have greatly enhanced the after school experience of the 50 young people who participate in the YWCA of Toledo’s CAS-Carrera program. The CAS-Carrera greening initiative has also shown that a coalition of funders, volunteers, parents and community-based organizations is indeed greater than the sum of its parts. With funding from the Toyota USA Foundation, YW/CAS-Carrera participants planted a Victory Garden after negotiating with the landlord, enlisted a volunteer master gardener, interviewed seniors to glean their expertise on growing their own WWII-era gardens, and -- as part of Job Club -- sold basil, oregano, mint, green and hot peppers, cucumbers, radishes, and carrots at a car wash fundraiser. At the Victory Garden Party, parents and neighbors dined on fresh foods harvested from the garden and left with seed packets to plant their own gardens.
